Joint UNEP-OHCHR Expert Seminar on Human Rights and the Environment

14-16 January 2002 - Geneva

This initiative, undertaken pursuant to a specific request from Commission on Human Rights (CHR), seeks to bring together human rights and environment experts to review the implementation of Agenda 21 with regard to the promotion and protection of human rights. The initiative will be guided by a group of 25 experts from the human rights, environment and related fields. The aim is to produce a set of key recommendations which will be presented to the 2002 session of the CHR and which could feed into the preparatory process for the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development.

The initiative will focus on the significant progress in bringing together human rights and environmental issues achieved since the Rio summit, both at the international and national levels. This includes the adoption of new multilateral texts (such as the Aarhus Convention), new provisions in national constitutions, domestic and regional case-law, and trends in review and decision-making mechanisms in international agencies. The participation of experts from a wide range disciplines and national backgrounds is crucial to such a review.

The Group of Experts will hold a Preparatory Meeting on 14-15 January 2002 to discuss and draft a concise set of recommendations. In this task, they will be aided by a background document (including submissions received from governments, NGOs and other international agencies). The draft set of recommendations will then be presented to a one day Seminar on 16 January to which governments and key observers from the other UN agencies and civil society will be invited.
