OSLO - June 15th. Today, in Oslo, Norway, the Sophie Foundation presented the Sophie Prize for 2006 to Romina Picolotti. Activities, meetings and conferences associated with the presentation of this prestigious award have been ongoing since Monday. Events included official meetings, meetings with foundation, local and regional academics and many other actors that operate in the realm of Human Rights. Ms. Picolotti also participated in numerous meetings on the Uruguayan cellulose case in Oslo.
Romina Picolotti was awarded the Sophie Prize for her innovative contribution to the promotion of the link between human rights and the environment. Picolotti spoke to a room full of human rights and environmental activists about her work and her fight for the protection of human rights for victims of environmental degradation. The ceremony included musical and cultural presentations of "tango" and "folklore", in honor of Argentina, her country of origin.
Her speech invoked the important and fundamental need to understand that the Earth does not belong to human beings- human beings belong to the earth. It is of utmost importance to protect persons affected by the degradation of the environment, because at the end of the day, to protect the Earth is to protect humanity.
