New Odorous Emissions in Fray Bentos

This morning, the city of Fray Bentos smelled new odors caused by an incident at the cellulose plant, Botnia.

According to the company, the plant suffered an unexpected energy outage, and also lost its energy connection to the national grid. Because of this, the auxiliary caldrons ceased operating, provoking large emissions of odor.

Different to what occurred last week, when the emissions were limited to the plant's surroundings, the smell was noticeable throughout the city. Many local residents communicated with radio stations to denounce the episode.

For the moment, there are no reports of illness due to the episode. The company had already informed that the emissions have no negative impacts on human health.

Last week, and episode of odor originating at the company caused nausea amongst six school children in Fray Bentos. At that time, the company informed that the episode, lasting 15 minutes, was produced because of adjustments of the plant.

Concurrently, the company is investigating the power failure that obliged to halt the production processes.
