Legal Focus

  • Comparative assessment: Make a comparative assessment between the articles of the American Convention on Human Rights and Principles of International Environmental Law (IEL).

  • Comparative Research: Research and compare human rights sentences (right to information, to participation, access to justice, to health, to healthy environment, among others) within two systems of human rights protection (Organization of American States, European Union).

  • Culture and Environment: Identify areas of legal protection based on the linkage between culture and environment, for eg.: genetic property, protection of local knowledge, and definition of norms of protection.

  • Environmental Jurisprudence in Argentina: Research and monitor environmental jurisprudence in Córdoba and Argentina in general, elaborating a database of existing jurisprudence.

  • Environmental Legislation in Argentina: Make a collection and systematization of environmental legislation at the local and national level. This work can be assisted by observing laws that overlap, identifying the ones that are tacitly derogated, or that are non-existent in the environmental field.

  • Environmental Jurisprudence in Int. Human Rights Systems: Research and monitor jurisprudence on the link between human rights and the environment in the European, Inter-American, African, and UN HR Systems.

  • Toxic Waste in Latin America: Identification of toxic waste disposal in Argentina and more generally in Latin America. Also identify affected populations /impacts and posible mechanisms of protection, provisional measures, etc.

  • Human Rights Jurisprudence in Argentina: Research and monitor jurisprudence in Argentina based on Human Rights Covenants, particularly in the scope of economic, social, and cultural rights.

  • IAHRS Strategy: Prepare a strategic memo on how to advance environmental issues at the IAHRS using art. 29 and International Environmental Law (IEL), Victims, Precautionary Measures and Precautionary Principles, Participation, Access to Justice.

  • OAS Strategy for Public Participation: Review the Inter-American Strategy for Public Participation and write a memo (5-10 pages) on how the strategy can be strengthened with respect to human rights (e.g. include jurisprudence on the right to participate and right to information of the IAHRS; to be submitted to the Director of the Unit on Sustainable Development and Environment).

  • Rural Poverty and Environment: Research the relation between rural poverty and the environment and identify possibilities for legal intervention.

  • San Salvador Protocol Research/Essay: Work with CEDHA to draft a paper analyzing the environmental content, nature and advocacy potential offered by the San Salvador Protocol.

  • Review the Inter-American Strategy for Public Participation: And write a memo (5-10 pages) on how the strategy can be strengthened with respect to human rights (e.g. include jurisprudence on the right to participate and right to information of the IAHRS).

  • Search for jurisprudence: Relevant to Environment at the European, Inter. American, African, and UN HR Systems.

Multi - Disciplinary Focus

  • Comparative Study on Poverty / Environment / Public Expenditure: Compare public expenditure on infrastructure in rural impoverished areas and urban areas with environmental problems. Study the relationship between geography, contamination, economic level, and public expenditure.

  • Environmental and Social Impact of Genetically Altered Products: Research and identify the status of production of transgenic products (ex. percentage increase); changes in biodiversity as a result of transgenic crops; environmental and/or cultural impact on traditional communities and rural workers; evident health problems or potential risks depending on the transgenic product. Advance on the ongoing project concerning transgenic soy in Argentina. Produce a similar project for Brazil using similar methodologies.

  • Toxic Waste Mapping (for example, nuclear waste): Research existence of toxic waste in Argentina, and more generally in Latin America. Also research impacts on affected populations and legal means to protect those populations.

  • Violation Conflicts and Environment: Preparation of a theoretical framework on the relationship between environmental degradation and violent conflicts (interns), definition of standardas in America.

  • Social Impact of Mining: Noting the levels of contamination of land, water, and atmosphere, identify the social impact (health and culture) of mining in Argentina, Peru and Ecuador. Identify the common indicators and mechanisms of prevention.
