CEDHA's effort to create the International Clinical Network

October 4, 2006

Esteemed Colleagues:

The Legal Clinic at the Center for Human Rights and the Environment (CEDHA) in Córdoba, Argentina is interested in creating institutional ties with environmental clinics in the United States to foster great collaboration and exchange of ideas and resources.

CEDHA is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the protection of the environment in connection with the violation of basic human rights. The legal clinic was founded in the year 2003, and is the only clinic dedicated to taking cases concerning human rights violations caused by environmental degradation or by the non-sustainable management of natural resources, in Latin America. The clinic currently has a caseload of approximately 10 cases, representing a broad range of issues including:

  • Access to clean drinking water

  • Influencing public policy to increase access to information and the use environmental impact statements.

  • Proper treatment and clean-up of hazardous waste and pathogens

The legal clinic not only litigates public interest cases that affect the environment and human rights, but also works on training and empowering affected communities, giving them the tools necessary to have greater access to justice. In addition, the clinic is dedicated to building the capacity of law, journalism, public policy students.

The training environmental lawyers, however, is the core of our mission and we serve students from diverse universities in the City of Córdoba, Argentina including students from National University of Córdoba and various private universities. Our goal is to provide new and aspiring lawyers who are interested in human rights and the environment with the necessary skills, both theoretical and practical, to become effective advocates for the public interest.

To this end, we are interested in increasing our collaboration and exchange of information with other clinics around world, as we know we share similar objectives and face similar hurdles, and in that way build our own institutional capacity and effectiveness. If you are interested in learning more about our current projects we invite you to check out our webpage: www.cedha.org.ar. In addition, we invite you to email us at: clinica.tabarelli@cedha.org.ar and clinica.sebastian@cedha.org.ar with your contact information so we may add you to our listserv for periodic updates. We are also interested in being added to your mailing list and/or listservs to learn more about the work of your clinic. You may reach us at the emails above or via mail at:
